Syria will conduct its first parliamentary elections on October 5, following the ousting of Bashar al-Assad. The state-run SANA news agency announced that the new People’s Assembly will consist of 210 members, with one-third appointed directly by interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa. The elections are part of efforts to rebuild state institutions and gain legitimacy amid ongoing regional and international stabilization efforts. The assembly will be responsible for approving legislation to reform state-controlled economic policies and ratifying treaties that could alter Syria’s foreign relations. However, critics argue that the current electoral system fails to adequately represent marginalized communities. The elections were initially scheduled for September but were postponed due to security concerns in certain provinces. Al-Sharaa's administration has issued a constitutional declaration to guide the interim period, emphasizing the role of Islamic law while guaranteeing women's rights and freedom of expression. Al-Sharaa has also engaged in regional diplomacy, highlighting the necessity of security talks with Israel.
